In the recent auction that stirred the hearts and loins of guitar enthusiasts worldwide, a piece of musical history changed hands.
Crafted around 2006 by a skilled luthier whose name might not have resonated beyond local circles (me) this guitar acquired a prestigious provenance – it was for quite some time, owned and quite possibly cherished by none other than Mark Knopfler, the legendary guitarist and frontman of Dire Straits.
The instrument, a labor of love born in Newcastle, radiated a unique aura, bearing witness to countless hours of meticulous craftsmanship. Even back in 2006, I wasn’t what you’d exactly call a beginner at making these things. Ultimately, the gavel fell, and the guitar found its new custodian, fetching a staggering sum of around £20,000.
I don’t know about you, but I was surprised. And pleased. It would be nice if the new owner got in touch. I hope they enjoy owning what I think was a very good guitar.
