How to Tune an Octave Mandolin and What Strings to Use
Wondering how to tune your octave mandolin, or which strings work best? Here’s a quick guide.
How do you tune an octave mandolin?
Most players use GDAE tuning, bass to treble (like a standard mandolin, just lower). Some also use GDAD as an alternative.
What strings should you use?
For a standard scale octave mandolin, around 22″ these are the gauges I recommend:
G – phosphor bronze .045
D – phosphor bronze .034/35
A – nickel wound .018
E – plain steel .013
I use D’Addario for reliability and tone.
The right strings and tuning can help, but the biggest difference in tone and playability always comes from the instrument itself. If you’re still struggling with tuning, comfort, or sound—even after using the ideal setup—it might be time to consider an upgrade.
