Tuning and String Gauges for Irish Bouzouki
Tuning your Irish bouzouki and selecting suitable strings are key to getting the sound and feel you want.
Standard tunings are GDAE and GDAD (like a mandolin, but an octave lower).
Typical string gauges for 24.75″–650mm scale:
- G: .042″ phosphor bronze
- D: .032″ phosphor bronze
- A: .017″ or .018″ nickel wound
- High D: .012″ plain steel
For shorter scales, go a gauge heavier. Most players use unison pairs. If you want octave pairs, your intonation will be a struggle.
Getting the string choice right will help you get the best from your bouzouki.
But even with the perfect setup, the truth is the instrument itself makes the biggest difference.
If you find yourself struggling with tuning, intonation and tone, even after changing string, it might be time for an upgrade. I’ve been building Irish bouzouki for over 35 years, helping players get the sound they’re after.
