Every now and again, I get the urge to make an electric guitar. I’ve made a few. They have all been “relic” guitars, and a lot of fun to both make and play.
This year, I’ve been thinking about making something more in line (aesthetically) with my acoustic instruments. It all started a couple of years ago when an old customer asked me to make him a single pickup, short scale left handed 10 string electric bouzouki. Try saying that after a couple of sherbets.
Thing is, I couldn’t settle on a design. So I made two.
The first, (Model EG1) is a simple stripped down workhorse, but a lot of fun to play. The obeche body is married to a bolt on flame maple neck, has a solid colour body, and a single pickup. About as simple as it comes.
The noiseless mini P90 pickup is great, and you can have it at the bridge, by the neck or in the middle. You’d like two pickups? Sure. You can have three if you like. It’s up to you. You’d like a different pickup? Just let me know.
All the components are quality – Japanese Hard tail top loading bridge with compensated brass tele saddles, Gotoh 510 tuners, Evo Gold frets, ebony knobs on Alpha pots and comes in an excellent hard case.
The second, (Model EG2) is has a mahogany neck and a body made of mahogany substitute called amoora. For this prototype I’ve used a wenge fretboard, and wenge head veneers with an open grain satin finish. The Australian made twin Firebird style mini humbucker pickups are excellent.
All the components are quality – Japanese cut off tele bridge with compensated brass saddles, Gotoh 510 tuners, Evo Gold frets, ebony knobs on Alpha pots, a switchcraft three way switch and comes in an excellent Gator case.
I’ve made one of each of these Models – prototypes if you will, and I’ve glued up a stack of body blanks and necks. If you’d like me to make you one of these instruments, let me know. Whilst they’re not as cheap as a factory made guitar, I’ve designed these guitars to be as affordable as possible, so get in touch, they may not be as expensive as you’d imagine.
