Dyed maple burl purfling tutorial for luthiers

“A clear, practical guide to an often overlooked detail in guitar making. Full of ideas builders can immediately put to use.” — Michael Bashkin, luthier, USA

Dyed Maple Burl Purfling Tutorial

I’ve been using dyed maple burl for rosettes for a few years. The rosette is routed from solid burl mosaic — no bending involved. It’s a well known method, used by many luthiers. When I wanted matching purfling, I had a problem. Burl is brittle. It cracks, crumbles, and as far as I know, nobody was bending it for purfling.

This to the point tutorial shows exactly how I do it.

It covers material selection, slicing uniform strips, preparation, bending, installation, and gluing. Close-up footage of each stage. A clear workflow you can repeat in your own shop.

This is the second release in the NK Forster Luthier Mentorship — a growing library of practical video tutorials from my workshop. I plan to add a couple of titles each year.
